Education, more education, education made perfect is the only panacea for our country`s ills and evils. With more and real education I daresay we can easily raise the general level of intelligence of its teeming millions, create, in its future generations, the habit of clear and deep thinking and of appreciating new values that turn the acquisitive impulse of its people from its present direction to the direction of truth.

These words convey the unshakable faith in education as a means for inculcating the ideal of better worldliness upheld by the August Founders of DEI. The aim of the institute`s founding fathers was to evolve the superman of tomorrow. In pursuance of these lofty ideals, the genesis of education in dayalbagh was the opening of the Radhasoami Educational Institutes (REI) on January 1,1917 by Sir Anand Sarup, Kt., the fifth Revered Leader of the Radhasoami Faith. From its modest beginning, the nucleus in form of the REI, not only grew and got divided but also spawned new institutions in response to the changing and evolving needs of society.

A Significant development of far-reaching consequence in the history of education at Dayalbagh was the establishment of the DEI as a Registered Body in 1973, which integrated and brought under one umbrella all the educational institutes of Dayalbagh. In 1975, the Institute formulated an innovative and comprehensive educational policy with the mission objective of evolving a “complete man” which recived approbation from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the University Grant Commission (UGC), and the Ministry of Education and Culture (Department of Education). On May 16th 1981, the Government of India declared the DEI, Agra, comprising of the DEI women`s Training College, REI Degree College, Dayalbagh as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Accordingly, the three erstwhile colleges ceased to exist as separate entities and began functioning as the faculty of Arts, Commerce, Education, Enginnering and Science from the academic session 1981-82. The Institute has since been accorded the Membership of the Association of Indian Universities.

The Institute is located amidst the tranquil environs of Dayalbagh, a self-contained colony renowned for its serene environment and secular establishing, in which its inhabitants lead an active, disciplined and co-operative community life, conforming to the high spiritual ideals of their faith. On the outskirts of the historic city of Agra, the campus is situated in idyllic surroundings, away from the din and noise of the city. Nestled between lush green fields, it provides an excellent academic setting which is in harmony with nature. This, along with a simple, disciplined and principled life, undoubtedly contributes to the strength of the social, moral and spiritual fiber of the institute`s educational system.

Mission

The mission objective of DEI is to provide value-based, comprehensive and inter-disciplinary education to evolve a ‘complete person’, i.e., a well-rounded total quality person, whose hallmarks are intellectual strength, emotional maturity, truthfulness, simple living, high moral character, scientific temper, general awareness, interdisciplinary outlook and one who discharges duties and obligations and is capable of giving a fuller response to social and environmental challenges.

Sustainable Development, through ‘Sigma Six Q’ integration of six qualities: Innovation, Water Quality, Air Quality, Education and Healthcare, Agriculture and Dairy Practices, and Human Values. By advocating the principle of better worldliness, to build economy through research and frugal innovation anchored in the principle of achieving more with less. 

Selfless Service, by developing values, creating willingness and capacity to work with one’s hands, promoting respect for dignity of labour and a spirit of self-sacrifice to serve humanity.

Digital Information transfer

The environment and nature protection in Dayalbagh and Dayalbagh Educational Institute has been implemented very seriously. The Ministry of New and Renewal Energy has recognised our aforesaid campus as one of the sustainable campuses. Therefore, most of the exchange of information is being carried out in both organizations in digital form leading to paperless offices. The documentations are only printed under compulsion. This way of life is in consonance with the Government of India policy and action plan for sustainable development and environment protection.

The Institute has introduced a scheme of innovative and comprehensive education at university and non-university general and technical education levels which aims at excellence but not at the cost of the relevance, which inculcates dignity of labour, encourages initiative and creative work, which is multi-disciplinary, which prepares men for the increasingly techno-oriented society of tomorrow without uprooting them from their agricultural moorings, which will generate in the alumni the basic values of humanism, secularism and democracy by exposing them to the principles of all the major religions of the world and to their own cultural heritage, thus developing in them an integrated personality of well-adjusted men whose world has not been broken into fragments by narrow domestic walls.

Revered Professor P.S. Satsangi Sahab, during His tenure as the Director of DEI, utilized concepts from Applied Systems Engineering to elucidate the relationship between the Aims and Objectives of DEI's Education Policy, the Educational System of DEI and DEI's Organization elements that lead to the development of a complete Man.

He identified 93 elements spred over Aims and Objects of DEI (30), Educational System of DEI (33) and DEI's Organisation (30) and developed a hierarchical structure depicting these elements in the form of an Interpretive Structural Model.

The Mission Objective, i.e., development of a Complete Man, is at the top of the structure as shown in the Figure. The Organisation elements such as Students Participation, Remedial Teaching, Interface for Learning, Access to Field Experience, Training and Motivation of Staff etc. are shown at the grass root level in the Figure. The Educational System that has been designed to acheive the development of the Complete Man is shown in the middle layer.

Any student who joins the undergraduate programme in DEI has to perform not only Intellectual activities but also take part in Physical and Social Activities through Foundation Courses, Field Experience (Work Experience), Rural Development, Limited Specialisation etc.

Differnt educational activities lead to not only Academic Objectives but also inculcate Moral and Spiritual Values and develop Social Sensibilities among the students. High Performance Standards, Fundamentals and Continuous Assessment in the Educational System lead to 'Quality'.

The model thus depicts how organisation policy elements in DEI are put together to create an educational system that leads to the attainment of the Aims and Objects and finally results in the Development of a Complete Man.

The Dayalbagh Educational Institute has embarked upon a bold initiative, VISION 2031 and formulated a comprehensive and progressive Strategic Plan for 2012-2031, with the goal to become a top teaching-cum-research Institute through an exemplary system of education. To establish Total Quality Management across all activities of the University, the Plan encompasses undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, infrastructure, information and communication technology and campus development.

Keeping in line with the Institute's unique scheme of innovative, comprehensive, inter-disciplinary and value-based education that fosters academic excellence with holistic development, the Strategic Plan is a road map for providing an environment to produce well-rounded students who are ready to take on challenges and be leaders with a fine blend of top quality academics, work-experience and a strong value system.

The Strategic Plan is action-oriented and embodies the spirit of "Why not?" It will be implemented in four phases, each of five years, with clear targets set for each phases. 

The Institute has accepted this challenge and is confident of acheiving success with the cooperation of faculty, staff, students, alumni and all other well-wishers.

I am pleasantly surprised that you have been putting into action something that I have been longing for many years as an educationist. I could have never imagined that, in a University where technical education is emparted, the technical students would be doing manual work giving them the dignity of labour which we mouth only on occasions like this..

What a great philosophy of life and of science is being developed and taught here at DEI. It almost perfectly matches my own conviction. I am overwhelmed with all the good work you are doing. I think we need another 2 hours to talk about all the things you are doing and how we can scale it nationwide. I don't know how many students you have today, but you got to have several million students and not several thousand. Everything that I heard deserves scaling. I think you are doing lot of good work in lots and lots of areas. And the key is to see if we can take this into every district. Every district should have a DEI and every district should be focusing on these new methods, new way of doing things, producing quality alumni. Like I saw some have dedicated teachers, new skill set. Everything I heard is exceptional. I take all I have heard on face value. If what you are doing is indeed a success for the last several years, it needs scaling immediately..

I was blessed to witness a self-contained ecosystem in Dayalbagh. Atmosphere absolutely free from pollution, dignity of labour and equality of society. These values if imbibed by the larger ecosystem, it will go a long way in creating egalitarian society. Most commendable is the manner in which Covid menace was delt with.

How do I express the feeling of bliss and fulfilment at immersing myself in an academic and research ambience, which has always been and continues to be far ahead of its times. The values which form the foundation of acquiring knowledge and wisdom at DEI not only make it unique, but also the guarantee for its sustenance for centuries to come. The live practice of the foundational values are evident in every Faculty/Centre I visited. The high levels of motivation among the teachers and the taught are proof of the values…
